A wall painted with anti climb coating is extremely difficult to be climbed onto and it leaves its marks on the climber, their clothes and shoes. The paint consists of a thick oily coating. It is usually applied with a trowel, stiff brush, or by hand wearing a protective glove. This paint looks similar to smooth gloss paint once applied to a surface but it stays slippery indefinitely and therefore prevents any intruder from climbing on the surface.
It is used to prevent intruders from climbing on objects such as fences, lampposts and walls. Its effectiveness is due to the fact that it is made with non-drying oil thereby keeping the surface slippery and greasy. Also, it leaves its mark on an intruder or any person that touches it and this makes it possible to identify intruders.
Anti climb paint works in cold or hot weather conditions sticking to the surfaces to which it is applied. This type of paint can be used on cement, plastic, metal, roof tiles, wood, brick and most building materials.
It is particularly effective on down pipes, parapets, walls, roofs, boundary fences, and lamp standards. It can be used as a deterrent for sports clubs, factory sites, schools, churches, garden sheds and to protect private properties. Its life-span is approximately three years, and after that a fresh coat can be applied, depending on the present and local weather conditions.
Although anti climb paint can be used on private properties and can be used by anyone, it is important to know the rules that should be followed. For the safety of the general public, the paint is usually applied above a certain height. Generally, a height of 8 ft. above the ground is recommended. Plus by applying the paint at this height will make it more effective when an intruder has to climb a few feet before being deterred by the paint. Even though anti-climb and anti graffiti paint appears similar to a regular paint it is actually very slippery when you touch it. You will need to check with your local regulations and legislation regarding the use of anti climb and anti-graffiti paint. It’s also advisable to consult the manufacturer’s safety data sheet prior to using the paint.
Wherever you apply this paint, you should put up a clear warning sign. A handyman or roofer would not be happy if they come do some work on your property or business premises and get covered in this sticky oil-based paint! So a visible sign will be required to prevent this from happening.
